Basho entered Sendai and went on to Miyagino, a famous place, the name of which was used as makurakotoba ("pillow word," or fixed epithet to be placed at the head of Japanese tanka poems) by poets of an older time. He went from Shiogama to Matsushima by ship and experienced moments of bliss there, watching the moon shining over Matsushima. Michael Yamashita photographed Matsushima Bay from the top of Mt.Otakamori, located on the opposite side of Matsushima. The sunset, changing the colors of the islands to gold, is indeed "the most solemn in Fuso" ("Fuso" being another name for Japan).
