Environmental Management by Tohoku EPCo Group

Tohoku EPCo Group consists of a variety of lines of business such as construction, manufacturing, information processing, electricity industry, etc. For environmental efforts, Tohoku EPCo formed an “Affiliated Company Environment Liaison Committee” in FY2001, and promoted discussions and exchange of information about the measures for cooperation of the companies in Tohoku EPCo Group. To further promote the environmental-conscious management, “Company Group Environmental Committee” was formed as a senior organ in FY2004 to develop the Group's environmental policies and environmental action plans. In FY2007, the name of the committee was changed to “Tohoku EPCo Group Environmental Committee” and increased the number of participating companies from 15 to 32, and the environmental management system was reinforced.

Tohoku EPCo Group Mid-Term Environmental Action Plan

Tohoku EPCo Group Environmental Committee develops environmental policies and environmental action plans.

The committee defines Tohoku EPCo's vision, “Image of Environment We Pursue,” and “Environmental Policy” as the policy senior to each company's environmental policy, and develops “Tohoku EPCo Group Mid-Term Environmental Action Plan” as a three-year plan to crystallize the Group's environmental policies.

The companies of Tohoku EPCo Group will reflect the environmental indicators and measures mentioned in the Environmental Action Plan in their respective action plans to the greatest extent possible, and strive to reduce their environmental impact by evaluating and reviewing their plans every year.

Results of Efforts in FY2006

CO2 emissions per employee in the office sector decreased by 0.1 tons from the previous fiscal year to 3.1 tons, whereas CO2 emissions per unit in the production process sector increased by 23 tons from the previous fiscal year to 308 tons for 10 million yen in sales.

As for industrial wastes, the rate of effective utilization reached 97%, achieving the target for two years in a row.

As for the creation of Environmental Management System, we developed Tohoku EPCo Group EMS (T-EMS) guidelines to further promote efforts of each company in the Group, and implemented the system at Tohoku Electric Power Engineering & Construction Co., Inc. and Kitanihon Densen Service Co., Ltd. on a trial basis.

Development of Environmental Action Plan for FY2006

As for the Environmental Action Plan for FY2005, Tohoku EPCo has decided to effectively promote more specific efforts through the cooperation among the companies in Tohoku EPCo Group as it is required to take on-target measures in anticipation of diversifying environmental issues such as growing interest in CSR (corporate social responsibility), the reinforcement of regulations on the reduction in CO2 emissions and waste management, etc.

Holding of Tohoku EPCo Group Environmental Committee

The Tohoku EPCo Group Environmental Committee held a meeting in May 2007. Based on the Group's Environmental Action Plan and in consideration of the results of efforts made in the previous fiscal year, the committee worked out a plan for FY2007.


Tour to Facilities Related to Environment

The Affiliated Company Environment Liaison Committee held tours to facilities related to the environment. In November 2006, the Committee observed efforts at Celestica Japan K.K. and Tohoku Instruments Co., Ltd. as a company of Tohoku EPCo Group.

Acquisition of ISO 14001 Certification

Of the companies in Tohoku EPCo Group, ten companies have acquired the ISO 14001 certification, and are promoting efforts to reduce their environmental impact.

Environmental Activities in Close Cooperation with Local Communities

As part of the environmental communications as a priority policy of Tohoku EPCo Group's Environmental Action Plan, Tohoku EPCo is promoting environmental activities in close cooperation with local communities.

For such activities, the companies in the Group are working to develop trust-based relationships with local communities through the promotion of daily regional collaborative activities.

Tree-Planting by Tohoku Yochi Co., Inc.

On the opportunity of the commemorative tree-planting project conducted as part of the 25th anniversary of foundation, Tohoku Yochi Co., Inc. has annually conducted since FY2005 tree-planting activities with its sales offices and local communities in one. In FY2006, five sales offices planted trees.
