Since its foundation, the Company has promoted business activities, giving high priority to trust-based relationships with local communities and customers, under our philosophy that “the Company cannot grow without the prosperity of the Tohoku district.” However, the confidence of local communities in the Company has been seriously impaired by the results of recent general inspection of nuclear quality assurance systems and improper handling of data of power generation equipment and facilities. We would like to deeply apologize again for having caused you a great deal of worry and inconvenience. Considering the matters that have been made clear recently, we regret that our activities have lacked the following three points of view on a company-wide basis: - To “notice” improper handling; From now on, we plan to create corporate and organization culture not to cause and overlook improper matters, and to properly disclose information by reliably implementing, on a company-wide basis, the preventive measures that are developed from these points of view. And, I myself intend to take the lead in making efforts to make “safety first” established as the corporate culture that the Company can be proud of, and restoring the confidence of local communities in the Company. CSR for Tohoku Electric Power Co.Amid further evolution of competitive environment in the electricity industry, we address our business with the ideas “to become a company trusted and selected by local communities with top priority given to the ensuring of safety,” and “to contribute to society” with an aim to promote the improvement of our corporate value on a continuous basis. Specifically speaking, while stably supplying inexpensive electricity to customers in the Tohoku district, we have strived to promote well-balanced CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities in such aspects as economy, environment, society, etc., always bearing in mind the stakeholders (customers, local communities, clients, employees, shareholders, investors, etc.) who support the Company. From now on, we will continue to make such efforts, and promote untiring corporate reforms by clarifying what should be succeeded and what should be changed. Continuous Efforts and Further Step-UpIn 2005, the Company formed the “CSR Promotion Council” with the President appointed as chairman, and formulated a CSR activity policy to reinforce CSR efforts with three major points, i.e., “compliance with corporate ethics and laws and regulations,” “consideration to the environment” and “regional cooperation and support of regional invigoration,” under the slogan of “Greater Confidence of Local Communities in Tohoku Electric Power Co.” To make “compliance with corporate ethics and laws and regulations” well established in our organization and change our conducts, we undertake efforts with top priority given to thorough implementation of measures to inspect the whole nuclear quality assurance systems and prevent improper handling of data of power generation equipment and facilities from happening again. As for “consideration to the environment,” we renew our recognition as a company to supply energy that the environment and energy are inseparably related to each other, and promote more active and steady environmental measures in consideration of growing awareness of environmental issues in the world such as global warming. As for “regional cooperation and support of regional invigoration,” every one of our employees goes back to the basics, confirms again the idea of “regional cooperation,” firmly keeps on having such idea, and maintains communications with local communities that we have addressed to date. Moreover, to practice appropriate and well-balanced CSR activities based on such activities made to date, we conduct once a year “CSR Stakeholder Survey” and “Survey on Corporate Image of Tohoku Electric Power Co.” to ask for their opinions. Through accumulation of communications with such stakeholders, we improve the quality of our activities and promote further step-up. To steadily promote the efforts to address CSR, it is important for every one of our employees to understand the significance of CSR and practice it in his or her daily operations. For this purpose, we continue the activities to help our employees deepen their understanding about CSR.
