Environmental Management System (EMS) - (1)
We are making efforts to continuously improve the environmental activities by establishing and introducing the environmental management system based on our Company's standard conforming to ISO standard in the whole company since March 2000.
Furthermore, all the thermal and nuclear power stations are aiming at the reduction in the environmental impacts by obtaining the certification under the international environmental management standerd ISO 14001 (as of July 2005). In addition, the environmental auditing is conducted by the internal auditors and the periodical inspection (annually) and the renewal inspection (every three years) are undertaken by the external inspection bodies.
The Obtaining Status of ISO 14001 Certification
Environmental Management in Thermal and Nuclear Power Stations

Cleaning activity around the power station
(Haramachi Thermal Power Station)
Each thermal and nuclear power station has established the environmental management regime for which each deputy superintendent acts as the "environmental management manager" under the top management of respective superintendent. Furthermore, each station is making efforts to carry out the environmental management under ISO 14001 and reduce the environmental impacts by working out the environmental policy as well as establishing the "Environmental Management Committee" consisting of the EM manager and section manager, where the environmental management plans are worked out, and the status and actual performance of these plans are verified and evaluated.
Haramachi Thermal Power Station (located in Haramachi city in Fukushima prefecture)

Cleaning activity around the power station
(Haramachi Thermal Power Station)
Output: 2 million kW in total (Units 1 and 2)
Main fuel: coal
ISO 14001 Certification
Obtained: February 21, 2000
Renewed: February 21, 2003
The status of operation and main activities (in FY2004)
Meetings of the Environmental Management Committee were held (in April, August, November, December, and March).
The Environmental Auditing, etc. were conducted (internal environmental auditing: in November, periodical inspection: in February).
Prevention of Global Warming
The power saving in the power stations amounted to about 27,450 kWh by decreasing the frequency of operation of the dust collector installed on the intake of seawater used for cooling the condenser from two times to one time per day.
Resources conservation and recycling
The industrial wastes were reduced by about 416,000 tons by effectively utilizing the coal ash generated by coal combustion for the raw materials of cement or other purposes. In addition, 1.95 m3 of reduction in the waste materials generated from engineering works was achieved by changing the heat insulating materials for the equipment and valves to detachable ones at the time of the periodical inspection of Unit 1 and reusing those materials.
Environmental communications
In Environmental Awareness Month (June), a "Delivery Energy Lecture" for high-grade students at elementary schools was provided, and the cleaning activities on the beach adjacent to the power stations and the surrounding roads was implemented together with the local residents.
