Environmental Conservation Activities in Close Cooperation with Local Communities

Our concept of environmental communications is to disclose information about the status of our efforts toward solving environmental problems and to take in the opinions and evaluations received from customers for the improvement toward next step while considering environmental activities and implementing such activities together with the local residents.

Our Company and our Company Group are actively pursuing, in unison, the environmental preservation activities with the local residents.

Especially in Environmental Awareness Month which is June, many activities such as tree planting and afforestation, resources recycling, environment lectures, and energy lectures by our personnel are organized, and in the Environmental Awareness Month in FY2004, a total of about 320 activities and programs were implemented in our offices and establishments and about 25,000 local residents participated in those activities.

Cooperation with the Local Community
--Eco-Point Activity--

The Energy Talk-in Society in the Kesen-numa Area, in which our Kesen-numa Customer Services Office participates, has established the "Kesen-numa Eco Club" and developed "Eco-Point Activity" since 2003 for the purpose of improving the citizens' environmental awareness.

This activity is an unique style program in our country, under which an "Eco-Point Card" is distributed to citizens who have participated in various environmental preservation activities such as cleaning, tree planting, and afforestation, and stamps are put on the Card as proof of such activities. Citizens who achieve a certain number of points can receive various benefits, for instance, such citizens are introduced in local newspapers or enjoy discount service according to the number of the stamps at designated stores supporting this project.

The Eco-Point Cards have so far been issued to about 7,000 citizens and this activity has so expanded that now, more than 10% of Kesen-numa citizens participate in the program.

Furthermore, in November 2004, the Society was awarded the "Environmental Minister's Commendation for Activities to Prevent Global Warming" which is presented to the individual or organizations who made a remarkable contribution to global warming prevention activities.

This event was based on the concept that it is important that various entities such as governments, companies, and civil groups make efforts toward the solution of environmental problems in cooperation with the local residents while sharing their respective understanding of environmental problems and building the partnership on the relations of trust.

In the event, which was held for a period of about one week with "Let's Know, Think, and Act" as a slogan, there were panel exhibitions on the theme of environmental problems, seminars, workshops, as well as the environmental concert by ocarina player Mikako Mototani, promoting communications with the local residents.
