The integrated coal gasification combined cycle power generation is a power generation system that is aimed at high efficiency by gasifying coal and using gasified coal in a combined cycle. Compared with conventional coal-fired power generation (thermal efficiency is about 40-43%), the thermal efficiency of integrated coal gasification combined cycle is as high as 48-50%, and it is also highly environment-friendly. The integrated coal gasification combined cycle is expected to be the next-generation technology to utilize coal. Together with other electric power companies, Tohoku EPCo established Clean Coal Power R&D Co., Ltd., and is now promoting the technology development of a demonstration plant.
