Environmental Management System

To achieve the priority objectives of the "Mid-Term Environmental Action Plan," which was formulated to translate our environmental policy into action, we have introduced across the board the Environmental Management System (EMS), which is based on our Plan-Do-Check-Action rule, and been making efforts to continuously improve our environmental activities.

As part of the introduction of the EMS, we have acquired certifications of ISO 14001, an international environmental management standard, for all our thermal and nuclear power stations with a view to reducing impact on the environment. (as of July 2005)

We have organized a promoting structure directly linked to corporate management for the appropriate operation of the EMS.

The council, chaired by the president, is intended to promote various measures arresting global environmental issues by judging from comprehensive standpoints.

Responsibility Setup

Under the "chief of overall EM affairs" (executive vice president), we have allocated an "EM manager" at each of our offices and establishments (general managers of Head Office's departments and branch offices, deputy general managers of branch offices, managers of offices, and deputy superintendents of power stations) to clarify who is responsible for environmental management at each office and establishment.

In addition, we have assigned an employee of each office and establishment to the post of EM manager, who is responsible for liaison and general coordination work in environmental management, and selected about 400 "eco-leaders," who act as facilitators in environmental activities at respective sections and groups throughout the Company.
