Foreword

For the next generation and the only one earth

Over the last three decades, governments, enterprises and individuals have made efforts to establish a sustainable society; however, environmental issues such as global warming and waste management have not mitigated but have become more widely spread and seriously apparent, at global and local levels.

Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. (TohokuEPCO) recognizes that our society as a whole must make a concerted effort to solve environmental issues. TohokuEPCO, in the deregulation of electricity market in Japan which accompanies a drastic change of its business, places environmental activities at the top of its management’s list and established the Environmental Policy and the Midterm Environmental Action Plan which covers the next three years.

TohokuEPCO will continue moving forward with a wide range of environmental activities together with customers and local communities and strive to develop environmental management, in order to achieve its goals, to keep economic growth and social progress with reduced environmental impacts, and to save limited resources on the only earth for the next generation.

TohokuEPCO’s Environmental Action Report 2003 provides its policies, diverse measures and environmental performance in FY 2002.

It is our hope that the information in this report will help you understand our strong commitment and our position on environmental issues.
