Major Results and Valuations of Our Action in FY2002

Following are the major results of TohokuEPCO's environmental activities in FY 2002:

Mitigation of Global Warming
  • Reduced CO2 emissions intensity to 0.425 kg -CO2/kWh.
  • Increased the amount of electricity purchased from renewable energy sources, including solar power and wind power (solar power: 1.5 times; wind power: 2 times).
  • The thermal efficiency rate of Higashi Niigata Unit 4-1 system was in 50.32% (Gross, HHV).
  • Entrusted with a NEDO’ s energy-saving model project in Kazakhstan.

Resource Conservation and Recycling
  • Recycled 1,097,000 tons of industrial waste, and attained a waste recycling ratio of 94.4%. Consequently, the target for FY 2003 is overtaken by actual results of FY 2002, a year before the scheduled time.

Protection of the Regional Environment
  • Strictly adhered to the relevant legal regulations and agreements.
  • Controlled SOx and NOx emission intensities to 0.26 g/kWh and 0.38 g/kWh, respectively.

Environmental Communications
  • Implemented nearly 220 environmental activities with 14,000 people in regional communities in June which is designated as“Environmental Awareness Month”.

Environmental Management
  • Carried out environmental training for approx. 300 Eco-Leaders.
  • Conducted internal audits at 42 offices.
  • Revised the calculation protocol for environmental accounting.
