Environmental Action Report 2002

Protection of the Regional Environment

TohokuEPCO is operating thermal, nuclear and geothermal power stations under legal regulations, and through voluntary agreements with local municipalities. During FY2001, TohokuEPCO was not involved in any environmental lawsuits.

Reduction of Pollutant Emissions

In order to reduce pollutant emissions from thermal power stations, high-quality fuels and control technologies have been adopted at each power station. Through these measures, TohokuEPCO has attained world-class levels of performance for SOx and NOx emissions.

Safety Measures of Nuclear Power Stations

Numerous safety measures, from planning to operations of nuclear power plants, are being adopted.
Furthermore, TohokuEPCO is making efforts to minimize radiation levels by extensively monitoring them around the areas surrounding our plants, to ensure the safety of the neighboring environments.

Management of Chemicals

TohokuEPCO has appropriately managed the amounts and usage of chemical substances, which are regulated by the PRTR (Pollutant Release and Transfer Register) law.

Harmonization of Power Facilities with Local Communities

To mitigate the impacts of power facilities on the natural environment and on the landscape, TohokuEPCO is utilizing environmentally-friendly pylons and poles. At sanctuaries for migratory birds, Izunuma (Miyagi Prefecture) and the mouth of the Mogamigawa River (Yamagata Prefecture), we have placed fluorescent signal rings over power lines to prevent birds from colliding with the lines.
