Foreword

Environmental issues are becoming increasingly more complicated and diverse. Thus, it is crucial for society as a whole to make a concerted effort to improve standards, while promoting waste recycling and impact reduction. Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. (TohokuEPCO) recognizes this need and encourages business to communicate with customers by conducting a wide range of environmental activities that will reduce both its own environmental impact as well as that of its customers.

Since its establishment in 1951, TohokuEPCO has endeavored to resolve environmental issues such as pollution, global warming and waste management. TohokuEPCO places environmental activities at the top of its management's list, and formulates environmental policies and action plans in order to achieve its goals.

TohokuEPCO's Environmental Action Report 2002 provides information on our policies and the significant results of our environmental activities during FY2001. We hope that the information in this brochure will help you appreciate our solid commitment to combating environmental issues, while showing you how communication with our customers can further enhance and improve our activities.
