Major Results of Our Activities in FY2001

Following are the major results of TohokuEPCO's environmental activities in FY2001:

Mitigation of global warming
  • Reduced CO2 emissions by 580,000 tons.
  • Increased the amount of electricity purchased from renewable energy sources, including solar power and wind power (solar power:×2; wind power:×5).
  • One of our affiliated companies (Tohoku Natural Energy Development Co.Ltd.) commenced operating the Noshiro-wind power station (capacity: 14,400kW).
  • Researched into coal purchasing accompanied by GHG emission credits (Basic agreement: completed in March 2002).

Resource conservation and recycling
  • Raised the amount of waste recycling from 920,000 to 990,000 tons and the waste recycling ratio from 82.8 to 83.9 %, and reduced the amount of waste disposal from 192,000 to 189,000 tons.

Protection of the regional environment
  • Strictly adhered to the relevant legal regulations and agreements.
  • Reduced SOx and NOx emission intensities from 0.26 to 0.24 g/kWh, 0.38 to 0.37 g/kWh, respectively.

Environmental communications
  • Implemented nearly 150 activities with regional communities, and 10,000 people participated.
  • Opened "Energy Web" on its website, in order to help children study about the environment and energy.
  • Received an award from the Minister of the Environment in the "FY2001 Activities for the Prevention of Global Warming", for an electrification project in a rural village in Vietnam, which uses a hybrid energy system combining solar and wind power generators and storage batteries.

Environmental management
  • Carried out environmental training for approx. 300 Eco-Leaders.
  • Conducted internal audits at 41 offices.
  • Revised the calculation protocol for environmental accounting.
